Halloween Pet Anxiety Hints

Further helpful hints prior to Halloween

You will want to get your camera clicking to capture all of these beautiful photo moments, and besides every time you look back at that photo you will have a little giggle as they look so darn cute!!

I just wanted to give a little bit of information on how to keep your pets safe prior to Halloween by preparing your pet before the event. A few tips that I would like to share is firstly get your Pet Halloween Costumes well in advance, I say this so there is ample time for your dog to try on his pet costume on to get used to it. This will take a little training for short periods of time and you need to reward your pet with a few treats when he leaves the outfit on extending the time every time he wears it.

This is especially so for people with pets which are about to experience their first season of goblins and ghouls which could frighten your pet, but by prepare your pet advance he will get used to wearing a Pet Halloween Costume as such and he will remember that if he leaves it on he will get rewarded.

So there is a little bit of work to be considered on how to prevent dog anxiety, but this is paid off many times over when everyone has such a good time on Halloween.  If your not too sure which 2010 Halloween Pet Costume to grab just yet, spend some time going through the clothes you no longer wear that is probably stored in your attic or basement and put it on your pet. If it gets rid of it then lightly tie it on.

Stay with the animal for a while and assure him it that it’s okay. Even distract it’s attention talking to your pet so it is not focusing on the clothing. When your pet realises that the outfit doesn’t restrict him he will be fine.

I guarantee if you do this several times with your pet costume that your dog will get used to the idea in no time.

Halloween Pet Care

What type of pet do you have personality wise?  I am asking this question because if your dog or cat is only a puppy or a kitten they really have not experienced a Halloween as yet.  And for all pets around this time it can be a little confusing for them, as being creatures of habit where we take them for walks everyday around the same time they become accustomed to the walk.  Around the time that we go walking you will find that your pet will start to get fidgety, as they know virtually that it is time for their walk.

In a few months time their lives will be turned upside down with strangers coming to the door at night dressed in all sorts of colorful costumes and kids being kids will be laughing or screaming and just doing what kids do on Halloween.  This is all foreign to them and they could react in the following ways:

  • They could start barking and going crazy, after all these people are on her/he’s turf and she is protecting it
  • The pet might get over excited and out of nature bite the person at the door
  • Or when the door opens they could make a run for it

All of these examples will make your Halloween memorable for the wrong reasons and the way you get around this so you have a great time on the night is to socialise your pet.  What does that mean I can hear you say?  It means to look at opportunities to take your pet to the park on a lead and he will see hear kids running around and screaming.  At first he may react and try to get off the lead to join in all the fun but he should be told “no” or “halt” and when he does this reward with a treat.

Perhaps too if you haven’t the time to take your pet yourself enrol your pooch in a few lessons at puppy school would then be ideal as it too can teach your dog how to be social not only with humans but with other dogs as well.

Just by a little bit of planning ahead to get your dog socialised and also what is very important is the fact where many people make an error is that they don’t spend enough time getting the animal used to wearing the costume and leave it to the last moment to dress the animal up on the night.  I can tell you now that if not adequate time is spent on both socialising and wearing the costume you will definitely not enjoy your night.  Reward is the best way to teach your pet and the reward happens every time that displays appropriate behaviour.  Using these simple hints and tips you are sure to have a wow of a night!

Pet Costume Information

I have been thinking long and hard about whether pets really do enjoy Halloween and have come to the conclusion that yes they do enjoy getting out with the family and just being with them on the night.

Depending on how old the dog is and how he can cope with people in various strange costumes coming over to him, and the noise around him constantly distracting him.

What I found is that if the dog is older they need to be watched more carefully as not only do they get scared by the “trick or treaters” yelling out the dogs response can be sometimes a reaction to bite or if not they could simply run off if they are a house dog and the doorbell is ringing continuously. An open door is inviting to them to escape.

Plenty of attention to your pet when you go out on Halloween, keep him on a short leash to keep him by your side and don’t forget to keep a few of his own biscuits to reward him for his good behaviour!
